bot is short for robot, and usually referred to programs whose function is work as a user (or client) and act upon certain instances. For example, this bot looks for phpbb forums and automatically registers and post a new topic with it's proper link/advertise/spam. Bots are also used in IRC channels as operators for automatic kick/ban when there's flaming or bad words used. Or to for file sharing (well, not really used nowadays)
